MTT stages: a checklist for every phase of the tournament

A tournament isn't one game. It's five different games wearing the same buy-in. Play stage two like stage four and the tournament ends before the story gets good.

Early stage: deep stacks, cheap mistakes

100+ big blinds, nobody's desperate yet. This is where post-flop skill earns its keep — small pots, real decisions, room to fold and live. Punting here for a coin-flip is the most avoidable way to skip the rest of the tournament.

Middle stage: the widening

Antes kick in, stacks start meaning something relative to the blinds instead of in a vacuum. Stealing gets profitable. Limping stops being a thing. This is where a tight early-stage image starts paying rent.

Bubble: math over ego

The stage where the next elimination pays $0 and everyone at the table suddenly remembers they have a bankroll. Chip value and cash value stop being the same number — which is the entire premise of ICM.

  • Short stacks tighten hard — surviving into the money is worth more than the chips say.
  • Medium stacks avoid big pots against deep stacks, but lean on the shorts who are playing scared.
  • Chip leaders bully everyone who's playing not to bust — that's the whole bubble strategy in one line.

Late stage: building for a seat that matters

  1. Accumulate with intent

Pressure medium and short stacks. Avoid unnecessary wars with other big stacks.

  2. Track your M-ratio

Above 30 big blinds, you still have room to maneuver. Under 20, you're in push-fold territory.

  3. Don't overvalue one pair

Top pair folds when the spot smells wrong — this is where hero calls go to die.

Final table: the money jumps harder than the cards

Payout jumps get violent near the top. A double-up here is worth less than the pay jump you just avoided losing. Chip leaders keep pressuring; short and medium stacks pick spots by ICM, not by hand strength alone.
