Micro MTT: win without torching the roll

Micro MTT is how you play for real prizes without torching the whole roll on one dumb spew. Not “enjoy poker”. Learn not to bleed.

Most players start here: rules, software, pace, first tactics. Normal on-ramp, not punishment.

Fat-field dynamics

Micro fields often mean hundreds or thousands of runners — prize pools swell, ITM and final-table odds shrink. Play the structure, not the “I’m running hot” story.

Early MTT stage

Early on, preflop open ranges matter. A tight entry saves chips. Example: folding A♥️J♠️ early at 9-max deep — not cowardice, math.

ABC: tight-aggressive (TAG), position, value bets. Not hero calls for content.

• Early position: strong hands only.
• Middle: slightly wider, still quality over boredom.
• Late: steal blinds often — that’s the job.

Open size: usually 2–3.5 BB.

Mid MTT stage

Blinds up, average stack down. Widen: suited connectors (98s, 87s), small pairs, weak Axs — not button-only anymore.

Read the table. Someone overcalls forever — value bet them. Discipline still matters: final table is far, tilt is close.

Open size: often 2–2.5 BB.

Bubble play

Bubble is the strip before the money. Next out = $0. ICM screams louder than ego.

• Short: careful — survive into a cash.
• Medium: skip giant pots vs deep stacks; pressure shorts clinging to life.
• Chip leader: bully mediums and shorts while they play “just ladder”.

Late stage

Build toward the final table. No romance.

• Stack building: pressure mid/short, avoid needless war with other big stacks.
• Blind control: >30 BB still has room to maneuver; <20 BB means push-fold mode.
• Don’t overvalue: top pair folds when the spot stinks.

Final table

Finals are where money jumps harder than cards.

• ICM: chip value ≠ face value; watch payout jumps and stacks.
• Big stack: pressure mid/short — risk is expensive for them.
• Medium: pick doubles carefully, hunt steals.
• Short: aggress for fold equity, not “call and pray”.

Bankroll

Without BRM, micros become a speedrun to the cashier. Underrolled is classic self-sabotage.

Rule of thumb: at least 50 buy-ins for your current tournament stake.
