Live table etiquette so nobody hates you

First live table? NUTS POKER collected the rules that keep people from hating you faster than your bluffs do.

Dos and don’ts: betting motion, slowrolls, angle shooting. No “be nicer” lecture — just what keeps the table playable.

Attention and turn order

Online highlights your turn. Live doesn’t babysit.

Stay in the hand with your head, not your phone. Mistakes start looking like angle shooting even when you’re just slow.

Break turn order and the Tournament Director (TD) can penalize you. Mistakes happen. Making them a habit doesn’t.

Don’t talk the hand

Not in the pot? Don’t narrate cards or lines. Chatter moves decisions.

More than two players left — discussion is off. Heads-up talk is fine; don’t turn the table into a podcast.

How to bet

• Example: BB = 100. One 500 chip with no words often counts as a call. Want a raise to 500 — say “raise”.

• Tip: put the full amount out in one motion. Betting 600 (500+100)? One move. If you announced the number out loud, you can finish in pieces.

Watch the clock

Thinking is allowed. Dying over a 2 BB preflop call is circus. Preflop is often binary: call, raise, fold, check.

If someone freezes, dealer or a player can call “clock”. Timer’s on — decide.

Don’t slowroll

Slowroll is holding the winner and milking the opponent’s nerves. Cheap move.

• Example: nut flush, opponent shoves river. You cover and “tank” a minute before calling — slowroll. Instant call then long showdown while you already know you have the nuts — still slowroll.

Don’t flash cards

Cover with a hand or card protector. Cards stay on the table, not up for a selfie.

• Tip: mirrored glasses at the table are a bad idea. Other people’s cards love reflections.

Chip stack hygiene

All chips visible. Big denominations in front, the rest in clean stacks of 20. So opponents and the TD aren’t guessing if you’re deep or just messy.

Phone while you’re in a hand

Still in the pot? Phone away. Often banned — hand can get killed.

Folded? Fine. Poker devices/software during an active hand? No. Period.

Verbal declarations

Clear words: “raise”, “call”, “fold”. Fewer dealer fights. Once declared, the action stands even if chips are late.

Leaving the table

Stand up after you act and fold. Even if you’re “folding anyway” — wait your turn. Skipping creates chaos and heat.

Emotions

Poker hits feelings. Don’t fireworks every win or turn losses into a scene. The table isn’t your therapy.

Food and drink

Eating and drinking are fine. Trashing felt and chips isn’t. Crumbs in the stack look like a losing strategy.

House rules

Every casino has quirks: buy-ins, rebuys, blinds, dress code. Read them before you sit, not after the penalty.
