Ledger vs Rash: is AOF skill or a coin flip?

Two illustrated poker experts facing off with a glowing coin flipping between them

Vikram calls AOF a pure range exercise. Rashad calls it a coin flip with a chart taped to it. We put them across the same two buttons and let them argue about whether skill even survives the format.

Vikram Sharma

The Ledger

Two buttons doesn't mean two decisions worth of skill. Every hand is a range lookup against depth and position, and getting that lookup right or wrong is the entire edge — it's just concentrated into one click instead of spread across four streets.

Rashad Quliyev

Rash

Concentrated into one click that still gets decided by a random card runout close to half the time. Call it a range lookup if you want — from where I'm sitting, most AOF pots get decided by the deck, not the decision.

Vikram Sharma

The Ledger

The deck decides who wins the pot. It doesn't decide whether the decision was profitable. Those are different questions, and only the second one is the skill part — the same way a correct fold that would've won isn't suddenly a mistake.

Rashad Quliyev

Rash

Fine, philosophically true. Practically, two players who both know the exact same range chart will get almost identical long-run results in AOF, because there's no post-flop room for one of them to actually outplay the other.

Vikram Sharma

The Ledger

Almost identical isn't identical — the player who tracks depth changes correctly every single hand still beats the one who plays a static range all night. That gap is small per hand and enormous over a thousand of them.

Rashad Quliyev

Rash

A thousand hands of a small edge sounds a lot like variance wearing a nicer outfit. I'm not saying skill is zero — I'm saying it's a smaller slice of this format than people who love spreadsheets want to admit.
