Poker terms glossary: stop googling every hand

Jargon is cheap; precision is expensive. New players treat terms like collectible stickers — «I know what EV means» while calling river bets with 15% equity. A glossary only earns its keep when each word maps to one decision rule you can execute under clock pressure.

Preflop vocabulary that actually fires

Open, 3-bet, cold call, squeeze — each implies range width and stack depth. Saying «I 3-bet light» means nothing without position + fold equity estimate. I drill: UTG open ~15%, BTN steal ~45%, BB defend vs min-raise ~35–40% — terms attach to percentages, not vibes.

Postflop: texture language

  • Dry board — disconnected, rainbow — favors range bet small; wet board — connected, suited — favors check range or large polarized bets.
  • Nut advantage — who holds the strongest merged portion; drives bet sizing, not ego.
  • Range vs range (RvR) — both players hold distributions; equity buckets replace «I have top pair.»
  • Pot control — keeping pot small with medium strength — not «checking because scared.»

Tournament terms with arithmetic

ICM (Independent Chip Model) converts chips to $EV near bubbles. ITM — in the money; min-cash — worst paid spot. Chip EV (cEV) ignores payout jumps; $EV does not. When someone says «ICM pressure,» ask: «What is the fold equity premium in big blinds?» If they shrug, the term is decoration.

Study stack: how I stopped term-collecting

Flashcards failed me — decision logs worked. One column: term used. Next column: number attached (SPR 4, MDF 62%, blocker Ah). After 30 sessions, my leak was clear: I said «pot committed» 47 times with SPR > 6 — vocabulary masking bad preflop plans.

I remember googling «blocker» mid-hand and timing out

I remember holding Ac on Kc-T-7-2 facing a river overbet, googling «blocker bluff» on my phone, and timing out into auto-fold with the nut blocker to the flush. Irony aside, the real leak was no pre-session glossary — terms lived on Wikipedia, not in muscle memory. Built a one-page sheet; same spot next month: snap call because nut blocker + capped range was pre-written.
