Table position decides more than your cards

Two players get dealt the same hand. One wins a pot with it, the other folds preflop and never finds out. The difference is rarely the hand. It's the seat.

Early position: play scared, get paid

Under the gun, everyone left to act can 3-bet, squeeze, or trap you. "Scared" isn't an insult here — it's the correct emotional setting. Open a range that plays well against aggression, because you will see plenty of it.

Middle position: the widening starts

Fewer players behind you means fewer people who can punish a marginal open. Suited connectors and offsuit broadways start earning their seat here — not because the cards improved, but because the audience shrank.

Late position: the actual money seat

On the button, you see every action before you act — every check, every bet, every hesitation. That information is worth more than most hands, which is why button ranges balloon and blind-stealing becomes a full-time job.

The blinds: paying for a bad seat

The small and big blind already put money in before seeing a card, then act first or second on every street after. That's two disadvantages stacked on top of each other — which is exactly why defending too wide from the blinds is one of the most common leaks at every stake.

  • Defend hands that play well out of position, not hands that just look pretty preflop.
  • 3-bet more from the blinds than you call — a bigger pot in position beats a small one out of it.
  • Folding a lot from the blinds isn't weak. It's the seat doing what the seat does.

Sit in the same seat for a full orbit on NUTS POKER NLH tables and count how many decisions actually came down to your two cards versus how many came down to acting last. The number will change how you play every seat after that.
